Finches make great companions. They are truly beautiful birds and they can live for many years as long as they are taken care of properly. As a responsible pet owner, it is your job to make every effort you can to ensure your finch’s health and happiness. If this is your first pet finch, it’s important that you follow my care tips and suggestions below.
- The first thing you need to do is purchase a bird cage for your finch. It should be a large metal cage that will give your finch plenty of space to roam around in. You will find a huge selection of bird cages at your local pet store, so ask for advice from a sales associate if you aren't certain.
- When furnishing the bird cage, you will need to purchase cuttlebone for your finch. You can get it at any local pet shop. You will then need to remove the hard shell from the cuttlebone. Then use a piece of twine to tie it to the inside of the cage so that your finch can reach it easily.
- You will also need to furnish your bird’s cage with plenty of perches and toys to keep him or her occupied and stimulated when you are not around to keep company.
- You should also be mindful of mites and pests that could harm you finch. Protect him or her by hanging a bird protector on the outside of the cage.
- When feeding your finch, make sure that their diet contains a mixture of white millet, hulled oats and canary grass seed. This will keep them happy and healthy.
- Make sure to give your finch fresh clean water everyday.
- Always clean your finch’s cage once a week with non-toxic soap and warm water. A soiled cage can have serious health effects for your bird if you aren’t diligent.
- Play with your finch daily. They crave interaction and love.
